Okay, I Concede. GMOs are a Bad Idea. Especially by Monsanto.

Aram has been mocking me for years for my optimism that GMOs could be useful. Well, I formally throw in the towel on this one.

Scientific American is reporting that Monsanto has a GMO corn that causes liver and kidney damage, and that they knew about this and marketed it anyway.

In my defense here, I always said it was a bad idea to trust the company that brought you dioxin and aspartame.

I don't dismiss the technology entirely. My first concern is the scenario where a gene that is built to make something really harmful leaks its genes into other species. My second concern is the possible undiscovered side-effects of eating their products. My third is that I am opposed to patenting living organisms and seeds. I will immediately admit that the first two can happen naturally and not just as result of engineering.

"...something really harmful leaks its genes into other species," That, my friend, is called a virus.

Humans have cultivated many a delectable treat from previously poisonous, or otherwise inedible, flora. That being said, I shall not be in the front of the line to eat an E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company engineered apple.
